The Booker Prize. A literary prize known by various names, including the "Booker," "Booker Man," the "Man Booker Prize," or the official "Man Booker Prize for Fiction," is given out annually to the best English-language novel.

The Booker-McConnell company established and funded the award in 1969. At that time, it was known as the “Booker-McConnell Prize,” though it is frequently shortened to just “Booker Prize." The award was renamed the "Man Booker Prize for Fiction" after management was turned over to the Booker Prize Foundation in 2002 and the investment firm Man Group took over as its primary sponsor.

Award system

Each year, one English-language work that has been published in Britain or Ireland is given this award, which is only given to novels. The award, worth fifty thousand British pounds, is split between the original author and the translator. The winner's life is affected by the award in two ways: financially (by the award's value and its effect on book sales) and morally (by translations and international recognition).

The Booker Prize gave rise to two international fiction prizes: the Caen Prize for African Literature in 2000 and the Russian Booker Prize, which was founded in 1992. In collaboration with the Booker Foundation, the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority, and the Weidenfeld Institute for Strategic Dialogue, the International Prize for Arabic Fiction was established in April 2007.

The initial financial reward for the award was £21,000; however, since 2002, the reward has been £50,000.

Sponsoring institution

Activities for selection and promotion are coordinated by the Booker Prize Foundation. An advisory committee made up of the president, writers, literary agent, library, and bookstore is in the process of being formed.

To preserve the reputation and caliber of the prize, the Booker Prize jury is composed of eminent academics, writers, and critics who are chosen annually.

2023 Award

The Irish novelist Paul Lynch won the prestigious British Booker Prize for the year 2023 for his book “The Song of the Prophet” after four years of work on it, and the Bulgarian novelist Georgi Gospodinov also won the International Booker Prize for Translated Fiction for his original novel “The Shelter of Time,” which he translated into English Novelist Angela Rudel.

There are differences between the two prizes. The first is a British prize for English-language literature that has been released in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The second prize is a sister prize, or subsidiary prize, to the main Booker Prize. It is intended for foreign works that have been translated into English, irrespective of the author's nationality. Since 2005, the award has been given annually to a work that has been translated into English. The award's financial value is 50,000 British pounds or slightly more than 63 thousand dollars, and it is split equally between the work's original author and the translator who converted the text from its original language to English.
