Who are the New York Knicks?
The Knicks are an NBA team that plays in the Eastern
Conference's Atlantic Division. The National Hockey League's (NHL) New York
Rangers and the team share Madison Square Garden as their home arena. They are
one of the two New York-based NBA teams. The Brooklyn Nets are the opposing
team. The Knicks are one of only two original NBA teams still headquartered in
their hometown, along with the Boston Celtics.
Origin of name
The franchise name, Knicks, is an abbreviation for Knickerbockers, after Father Knickerbocker, a well-known representation of New York City from a Washington Irving novel that also appeared on the team's original logo. Strongly associated with New York City, the term "Knickerbocker" also describes the oldest families in the city, who are thought to be descended from the original Dutch settlers. One of the earliest baseball teams to be organized, the New York Knickerbockers, was established in 1845.
When playing at
home, the Knicks primarily wear blue on their jerseys. The orange and white
colors of the city flag are connected to blue.
Founding and beginning
Ned Irish founded
the team in 1946. It was one of the original members of the Basketball
Association of America (BAA), which merged with the National Basketball League
(NBL) in 1949 to become the NBA. In their initial years, the Knicks experienced
success. Throughout the playoffs, she was reliable. The Knicks appeared in the
NBA Finals three times in a row starting in 1950, but they lost each time.
Achievements
Only after Red Holzman took over as coach in the late 1960s did the Knicks start to reclaim their former hegemony. In 1970 and 1973, Holzman was successful in guiding the Knicks to two NBA championships. The 1980s Knicks saw mixed results, making six postseason trips but not making it to the Finals.
Patrick Ewing, a
future Hall of Famer, led the Knicks during the 1990s. Intense rivalries
between the Chicago Bulls and Indiana Pacers characterized this era.
Back to competition
The Knicks have had
difficulty regaining their illustrious past since 2000. Thanks to the offensive
combination of Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire, they won their first
division title in 19 years in 2013. They ultimately lost to Indiana in the
conference semifinals and were forced to wait until the 2020–2021 season to
make another playoff appearance.
