World Expo

World Expo

Tens of millions of people attend world expos, which give nations the chance to construct spectacular pavilions and completely change the host city for years afterward. London hosted the Great Exhibition, the first World Expo, in 1851. The idea gained traction and was replicated all over the world, showcasing an unmatched attraction and a history of outstanding legacies. In order to control and monitor these massive events, the BIE was established in 1928.

World Expos interests

World Expos are purposefully structured around a theme that aims to advance human knowledge, considers the goals of society and the individual, and emphasizes advancements in science, technology, the economy, and society. In terms of size, scope, duration, and attendance figures, World Expos stand alone among international events in the modern era. They are expansive learning and development platforms that act as a link between corporations, governments, international organizations, and the general public.

Classification and periodicity

"General Exhibitions of the 1st category" and "General Exhibitions of the 2nd category" were the terms first used in the 1928 Paris Convention. In 1972, a protocol to the Convention resulted in the replacement of the two categories with a single classification known as "World Exhibition." The current official term for World Expos is "International Registered Exhibition," which was granted by a new amendment that was adopted in 1988 and put into effect in 1996.

The time that has passed between the two World Expos has varied over time. The 1948 Protocol introduced some exceptions to the minimum six-year interval that the 1928 convention mandated between World Expos in the same category. The 1988 Protocol fixed the current interval at five years, replacing the ten-year interval that had been introduced in the 1972 Protocol.

One distinction between the First and Second Category General Exhibitions was that the former did not allow participants to build their own pavilions.
